Domestic Discipline...I mean Violence...I mean...Oops

My school is having a "Domestic Violence" campaign right now. There are little ribbons hanging all over the trees on campus and a booth set up in the student commons area.

It's great to bring awareness about such a serious issue and I am glad it has sparked some good discussions among the students. The only problem is...

I life in constant fear of accidentally saying "Domestic Discipline" in stead of violence...because I'm so used to discipline being the next word!! It just naturally flows in my head. I think about it all the time and I hear "Discipline" much more often than I do "violence."

It's like someone saying "Go above and!"

You naturally have to finish the sentence with "Beyond!"

I know the two are very, very different things. I just have to be very, VERY conscious about what I say and speak slowly so I don't have to answer a lot of questions!!

  1. Totally understand JJ. You need to borrow Stormy's definition and start thinking in terms of Domestic Harmony (DH) instead of DD. Then if you slip, you can say that a friend of yours refers to her marriage that way. ;) The cartoon has me ROFL.

    1. LOL Yes but unlike Stormy (I LOVE HER) but unlike her, I don't mind the word "discipline" hehe :) But DH does work as well!! I googled "Freudian slips" and that came up and I thought you all would love it! :D

  2. JJ, it is funny how both words stand out to me more-- Domestic and Discipline. Also the abbreviation for Domestic Discipline is DD and I've used DD for "direct deposit" change in a job and so everytime I wrote DD my mind did a double flip of that Direct Deposit or Domestic Discipline. Cute Cartoon. Hope you are having a good weekend.

The thing about mixing it up and if you accidentally say "Domestic Discipline" out loud...
if they actually know what it means, you may have just made a new friend! lol

    1. LOL so true! I venture to say most people on my feminist college campus don't know about DD and if they did they would probably be against it. But I guess you never know for sure!! :D Thanks for the comment!

  6. Do you ever mention as part of this campaign that women are perpetrators of domestic violence almost as much as men are, if not more so? It would be a very unpopular stance, but there is lots of data to back it up. Women can be extremely violent!

    1. Actually yes! We discussed this in my family issues class for about a week! It is very true that women are just as violent as men and there is an unfair standard where men can get arrested for hitting a women but women can beat up on men a lot without consequences. It is very sad but true! Thanks for bringing that up!! :)
